The Next President
The Next President is a simple web application where you guess for each state which candidate is going to win and the program plots a map showing the results and adds up the totals of the Electoral College, in short calculating your prediction.
For every state you can choose Democrat, Republican or Other. You can also choose the candidate (for the Democrats or Other). I keep statistics in the hope that it predicts something and will hopefully present the results at some time.
Select for each state who you think is going to win, the republicans, the democrats or a third party.
Select for each state who you think is going to win, the republicans, the democrats or a third party.

How it will play out
by Tony
Here is how it will likely play out:
Solid DEM: CA, CT, DC, DE, HI, IL, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT, WA, WI (252 votes)
Solid GOP: AL, AK, AR, CO, GA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MS, MT, NE, NC, ND, OK, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WY (196 votes)
swing states: AZ, FL, IA, MO, NV, NM, OH, WV (90 votes)
Needed to win: 270
Comments and caveats:
-INDICATOR: this remains in effect if polling continues at around 50-50 nationally on "bush approval" and "kerry-bush" matchups and no "sea change" (i.e. major scandal, world event) occurs dramatically affecting public's perception of the candidates
CAVEAT: Regardless of current polling Nader support drops at crunch time to about half of 2000 levels (likely), i.e. down to about 1.5% nationally and from 4-5% down to 2-3% in key DEM states like OR, WA, NH, WI, MN, and swings like NM and IA
COMMENTS: unlike many others, I see the swing states as eight this year, not 14 or 16. OR, WA, WI, MN, AR, LA, CO are not particularly in play this year, in my opinion. Each state is pretty solid in blue or red. For example, when you combine the 2000 results (adding Gore-Nader vs Bush-Buchanan), all of these were 52% or better in favor of its own 2000 winner.
-MI and PA are NOT swing states but BC04 is rollin' in dough and will campaign hard there to drain DEM resources so they will become media PRETEND swing states.
-NH likely returns to DEM column with a New England regional candidate, lower Nader vote.
All the above being said, here is my assessment of the swing states:
IA is likely DEM for the fifth straight election (7 votes) but was very close in 2000 so...
NM was also very close for Gore in 2000 overcoming a strong Nader vote (4%) (5 votes)
I'm paying close attention to how the job loss, coal, and steel problems the bush administration has had affects OH (20) and WV (5). (If OH goes DEM, however closely, Bush loses regardless of other swing state outcomes).
NV and AZ are trending DEM due to California and Hispanic influx but maybe not enough yet and still probably leaning GOP slightly (Bush badly needs these 15 votes combined again. These two plus one more (IA or NM or WV) gives kerry over 270 regardless of MO, OH, and FL. Sweeping NV, AZ, and NM (20 votes), for example, wins for Kerry and could be a sort of "southwest strategy". Clinton did it in 1996)
MO up in the air as usual but possibly trending "southern" in outlook like KY and WV. (Bush needs to keep this one away from Kerry badly. "Bundling" MO/IA wins for Kerry.)
FL is wacky as usual but favors the DEMS again slightly due to many factors: continued population influx from DEM areas of mid-Atlantic, New England, and upper Midwest; dramatic growth of pro-DEM, non-Cuban Hispanics along I-4 corridor; softening of pro GOP Cuban vote; softening of pro Bush military and veteran vote; Nader maybe gets only half of his 100,000 vote 2000 total; improved voting systems and counting (we hope) but (most of all) an engaged and highly motivated electorate turning out the DEM vote. Arrayed against this is Jeb and the vote counting apparatus of the state... we'll see (27 votes). (A DEM vote in FL gives election to Kerry easily, as we all know from 2000).
NOT TOO FAR FETCHED POSSIBILITY: NH and WV return to DEM fold and IA and NM go DEM again but Bush sweeps AZ, NV, OH, FL, and MO again. Election ends in 269-269 tie.
SUMMARY: As in 2000, Bush needs a pretty serious sweep of all the large swing states: OH, FL, MO, AZ plus IA or any two of WV/NV/NM. Kerry can get to 270 in several easier ways: AZ/NV/NM or IA/MO or some combination of 3 of those 5 or simply winning either of FL or OH
Oh well. Tony
Oops! Slight error in interpretation??
by jimmyJAMS
Ha, ha! My map comes out 269-269, but it says John Kerry will be President! Guess the programmer decided the Supreme Court wouldn't dare risk a citizen's revolt by trying to throw it GWB's way again. I think even the Repub's in Congress would vote cautiously on that one. Hooray for President Kerry! ;)

My map looks pretty damn close to McKinley's victory over Bryan in 1896...Kerry sweeps the Northeast(including West Virginia)and the industrial Midwest(except Indiana), along with the West Coast and New Mexico. Bush sweeps the South, the Plains, the border states, and the Rocky Mountain West.

John Kerry wins and will be projected the winner as soon as the California polls close. This is why:
First, when you look at the poll numbers for and incumbent president facing re-election, Bush (43) looks more like Carter, and Bush (41) instead of like Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan and Clinton.
Second, Kerry will carry all of the Gore States plus Florida (actually a Gore State), New Hampshire, and Ohio. If... Bush's elective war in Iraq continues on this course Kerry will also carry West Virginia, Arkansas, and Missouri. If Bush continues to exploit 9-11 then Kerry will carry Louisiana, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado. The rest of those idiot Red States Bush will carry no matter what.

Kerry Wins Big!
by Bob
Actually my map is based on the book the Emerging Democratic Majority by John B. Judis and Ruy Teixeira. The book looks at demographic, economic and cultural changes and is their assessment of the next decade in voting. They have broken things down by region/state and categorized the states as Solid, Leaning, Leaning but Competitive, etc. By using their trends/analysis the 2004 election comes out this way: Kerry 334 Bush 206 The big changes from the 2000 map are that Kerry would carry FL (as did Gore + trending Dem.) OH (huge job losses), MO (many job losses, less likely). It also gives the Dems WV, NH and NV. I think the total number will be closer, but putting together an electoral map for a Bush win leaves little margin for error. That's what drives me crazy about seeing the CNN/Time nationwide poll or any other for that matter. The percentage means so little.
Will be close but break big for Kerry or Bush at the end.
by Justin
I think this election will be close for awhile but I think it will break for Kerry or Bush late in the year. In the last 50 years, presidents either lose big or win big. As of today, I have OR,NV,AZ,NM,PA,MN,IA,MI,PA,FL,MO,OH,WV,and NH as battleground states. However, I think if it is pretty close, I think OR,MI,MN,and NH break Kerry's way in Sept or Oct. And I think NV,NM,FL,MO go Bush's way. Leaving the decision to OH and WV. BUT I believe it will break one way or the other, and if so, Kerry or Bush will win all or most of these states. Along with their base states.

comments to Michael
by tony
Addendum to mine (several posts above) and Michael (just above).
IA & NH now polling more strongly DEM MO consistently polling GOP @ +4-6 pts WI a major tossup but likely DEM still imho AZ close but leaning GOP Florida has gotta be a toss up. Everything I have seen has Kerry up 1-3 pts The key at this point = whoever gets 2 of 3 from PA, OH, FL
latest projection
by tony
Latest WI has Kerry a strong +8... bit of a surprise Smaller but improving Kerry leads in NH, OR, NM Bush advantage in AZ has shrunk to +4 Long way to go but my current projection has NH, OH, FL going to Kerry along with PA, IA, WI, OR, NM and the rest of the 2000 election blue states. Bush lead shrinking a bit in WV, MO, AZ,CO. Rest of the reds look solid but NV is an kind of an unknown due to infrequent polling data.

I win against Kerry in a 269 to 269 Vote.LOL
And the next president is KERRY
by Cees Vandenberg
We will see one of the largest and most complex electoral struggle in may be nearly 20 years! But mark my words: Kerry will win (substantial)and Bush is OUT and that's a victory for worldpeace. Most competitive will be: Fla (Bush, again), Ohio (Kerry), NH (Bush), Me (Kerry), Mich (Kerry), Wis (Kerry), Minn (Kerry), Iowa (Kerry), Mo (Bush), Ark (Bush), Tenn (Bush), N.Mex (Kerry), Nev (Bush), Wash (Kerry), Oregon (Kerry), Arizona (Bush), Colo (Bush)La (Bush), Mont (Bush). No problems for Bush in Alaska, Idaho, Utah, Neb, Wyo, ND, SD, Kan, Okla, Texas, Miss, Ala, Ga., SC and Indiana. Long shots for Bush: W.Va., Ky, Va and NC. Kerry is safe in Hawaii, Calif, Ill, NY, NJ, DC, Md., Conn, RI, Mass, Vt., Del and Maine. So we will see: Kerry 280 and Bush 258 (bye, bye). This is NO prediction, but a (mathematical) calculation, based on a pile of data. No doubts.
bit of a surprise in MO
by tony
But a pretty small polling sample with high MofE (4.7%). Kerry leads by about +3 in MO per Zogby/WJS %(5/15-5/23):
I now figure Kerry competitive or leading or expecting to go after (ad money) in the following red states: NH, WV, VA, NC, FL,OH, MO, AR, LA, CO, AZ, NV (any two tips the balance) Bush is trying to hold the reds and go after these blues: WI, OR, PA There is an anomolous poll out there (Quinnipac?) that shows Bush competitive in NJ, though. Strange.
another way to look at it
by tony
Posit that DEM nominee holds the 2000 blue states and adds NH and WV: CA, CT, DC, DE, HI, IL, IA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT, WA, WV, WI (269 votes)
GOP nominee wins: AL, AK, CO, GA, ID, IN, KS, KY, MS, MT, NE, ND, OK, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, WY (153 votes)
GOP must then sweep all nine of these states to gain a tie: AZ, AR, FL, LA, MO, NV, NC, OH, VA (116 votes) ...possible but an uphill climb.

..."because Bush sucks"? Steve, such a command of the language! I suspect your ability to predict the electoral outcome is on par with your vocabulary skills.
The House of reps decide a tie below 270

If your map ties like mine does, don't look to the Supreme court like the other poster noted. If no candidates gets the requisite 270 electoral votes, the election is decided by the House of representatives, guess which party wins then? (Hint "W")
Ick, huh?
4 More Years!!!
by Andrew
Bush wins big 345-193. The only states Kerry will win are CA, IL, MI, MD, DE, DC, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, NH, VT, ME, and HI. Kerry needs to figure out "it's the economy stupid." And that the "economy is doing great, stupid." Americans don't like taxes and the government running their lives. They're not ready to give up on the man who pulled them through 9/11, a recession, and a defensive jihad against the terrorists who wish to kill all of us; a man who gave them historic, promising reforms in education, healthcare, homeland security, and tax reduction; and a man who fights for Christian-faith beliefs including partial-birth abortion bans, anti-gay marriage stances, community volunteer programs, and the preservation of tradition; and the man who helped create millions of new jobs in the wake of a recession. All Kerry states except MA, RI, VT, DC, and HI are tossups. Other tossups which I predict Bush winning are WA, OR, MN, IA, WI, OH, PA, NV, and NM. AZ, FL, and MO are not tossups this time around...they are solid BUSH. Kerry is going down like all other MA liberals...Dukakis, McGovern, etc. Kerry doesn't resonate with the American people. Everyone hates Kerry and his liberal interest groups ganging up on Bush. All Kerry does is run his mouth, taking every side on every issue, failing to live up to his promises, and neglecting his duties as Senator. Nobody likes a rich ugly guy with a rich ugly corporate heir as his wife and a half dozen multimillion dollar homes. BUSH WILL DOMINATE!!

Andrew vs Tony
by Jeff
Tony posts a great deal in a factual manner of presentation, but gives no reason to believe any of it until he says, "Posit that DEM nominee holds the 2000 blue states...." At this point, readers involuntarily chuckle and think, "Yeah...and monkeys might fly out my butt!" Tony's underlying wishful thinking is found to be propping up his alleged facts.
Andrew presents an emotional argument, rather than statistical one, but one which should leave the reader thinking, "Yeah...that's probably true", after nearly every clause.
The silent majority is who decides elections, not the loud-mouths we see in the media. There *is* a reason, after all, why the turn-out was so very small for the Democratic primaries: the far-leftists (such as the "Deaniac" Bush haters) set the Democratic agenda long before the first primary ballot was punched...and people, the silent majority just plain aren't far-leftists.
Reagan did so very well in part because he was on the right. George H.W. Bush lost to Clinton only because Ross Perot split the conservative vote. Clinton managed a second term because he was often a centrist and he appealed to the young (and yet, during the very same election, the country turned Congress on its head to be a check against Clinton. Now ask...who appeals to the young more, Bush or Kerry? Who is not a leftist wacko? And is there a third party this time to split the vote? Which party will be split?
Contrary to Michael Moore's propoganda, the majority in this country are not liberals, at least not in the Michael Moore sense of the term. Most self-described "liberals" (at least in the media, according to a PEW report) associate the term "liberal" with *Libertarianism*, which to them (again, according to the PEW report) means that they believe that it is far more important for the individual to be able to pursue his or her goals without government interference than it is for the government to help the needy. And which party, by this definition of "liberal", best defends the liberal agenda? I'll give you a hint with a line that won an election for one former president:
"Government is not the solution to the problem, government IS the problem." --Ronald Reagan
Too close to call;for now
by Robert
The resultof this election will be determined by the electorates sentiment, and as both camps appear to be level pegging, the marketing men and spin doctors will throw the winning dice. William Hill (Britains largest bookmakers make both parties 5/6) and my monies going on Kerry simply because his PR people have so much ammunition on the Bush regeime. As a foot note, expect Blair to lose office too. Both men failed to understand their own peoples view on Iraq.
John Kerry is the Best
by Dairon
John Kerry is really the best person to substitute Bush, I hope he will be our next president and he'll guide us to the best future we can imagine, Specially we "hispanic people" hope he will care about us more than Bush did, we "cuban people" hope he will give us liberty, cause US say we don't have liberty there in Cuba, and that's totally true, but we don't have liberty either here in the US if we can only go to see our family every three years and for only 14 days, Hey Bush "What kind of liberty is that"? We are living as in jail, where you can only see your family and friends for a limited time, we don't deserve that because we just came to this country and left our family in order to work here and help them, we are just people who want to be free like you are. We should have the same rights as other people do, and we don't have those rights. Bush I thought you was a reasonable person but now I think different. That's why I say: """"" Let's vote for Kerry, Let's make him our president and see what he can do for us""""".
Thanks.

It's one thing to be a conservative prick. But to be a racist also? Find out what he thought about Dr. Martin Luther King. Our current vice pres has it all. Served in the military? Hell no! Avoided at all cost but ready to send other peoples kids into harms way. I serve in the Marine Corps and have seen combat, so I can talk about this. I assure you that anyone who is not willing to go the distance and do what they preach gets no respect from us. Cowards benifitng from my friends deaths. Maby I should run for office.
Less spending
by Erik Rylander
This is direct response to the comment made by the fella quoting Reagan about less government.
The Republicans have everyone believing that they are a "small government" party. The facts just don't support the case. I don't care how you look at it. Inflation adjusted dollars as a % of GDP spending increases or decreases year on year are always substantially higher with a Republican in office than a Democrat. George Jr. has the worst record of them all. A fiscal conservative he is not. He is a social conservative (change the world ideals), and spend any amount of money to do it. In the mean time, he's cutting taxes to gain the political capital needed to get elected again. This short sightedness will only increase taxes in the long run, as, more a more tax dollars must be spent to maintain the debt. Be prepared 8 years from now with European style taxes, and crappy as American social benefits.
I'm all for the Republican ideals born in the American west (Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas etc). Those states have the get my government off my back attitude. The only problem is, the control of the party has beeen hijacked by big business, and they pander to the social idealologists of the South. The only problem is, the fiscal conservative hasn't figured out that the Republicans lie.
I work in the oil industry, and I've worked, and continue to work all around the world. George Jr. is causing major problems for America. We will pay the price for Iraq. We will have no political capital to influence outcomes of international agreements in our favor.
Please vote King George the 2nd out of office!!! (actually I liked his Dad, a smart guy, unlike his hard headed son). I can't stand this dynasty crap.

Kerry tool of satan
by Mary
This man (kerry) is NOT a presidential kind. Because he is a person with "VERY WEAK FAITH" HE supports just about all the immorality issues that goes against GOD . What a hypocrite! to speak of God and faith and saying that one has to live out one's faith and yet he would not live out his faith as a christian he supports the other side. But at least Bush FOLLOWS WHAT A REAL CHRISTIAN OUGHT TO DO AND THAT IS TO BE AGAINST ABORTION AND GAY MARRIAGES. There was someone here who said that "follow" the leader error in grammars etc. To you I say, it takes one to be a great person first in order to be a good president. HOLLYWOOD, where all immorality resides and the "HELL" here in America, supports kerry, which makes it really clear which is endorsing KERRY and in my opinion, it isnt GOD.
ALso, what comes out of KERRY's mouth are all criticism of the president. CRITICISM of the president's accomplishments and yet Kerry NEVER talk about his own accomplishments. Why? He had none! At least not a significant one. He's riding on all his "negative ads" alone. It was easy for Kerry because all he has to focus only on 2 things: do is criticize and make promises which we do not know if he'll keep. that's kind of easy... It is difficult for the president because he has to talk about his accomplishments, his visions and then attack kerry who has done nothing so he cant say anything. Anyway, this is what I think, if kerry wins, they will rejoice down there. And I do not mean heaven/.

Most of the iraqi peoples religion is if they kill the americans they will go strait to heaven. right when we turn our back the iraqis weve trained will turn around and start fighting us again.
by the way since were spending so much money in iraq i think i might move there when bush finish's rebuilding iraq.

Bush WINS!!
by Dave
All you Libs better start start packing for Canada or France because Bush will be re-elected. Please relocate! I don't want you here anymore. America is my country not the U.N's. And to all those that say they are anti-war, I'm not pro-war. But, sometimes we need to fight. Calling yourself anti-war is like calling yourself anti-cancer. It's just a stupid statement. Who cares if France wants Kerry!!??!! Maybe they realize that Kerry will be the weak man that he appears to be and turn his back while they sell more weapons to our enemies. Losers!
Electric Chair in Texas
by Yvonne
Did everyone forget about Karla Fye Tucker? She would be alive today and spreading God's word in prison if George Bush hadn't sent her to the electric chair..He had to set an example because she was a woman.

Something is wrong with your program
by josh
There is something wrong with your program: I put in Nader took all states, and it predicted that Nader would win. We all know that if Nader won, they would make it illegal for him to be president and just make the Supreme Court decide who to put in office (BUSH). I mean look at how they managed to keep him out of the debates last election. After he got the required 5% vote needed to be able to debate, they changed it to 15%. Come on, man. You forgot to take into account the fact that democracy is basically dead.

I'm one a very few that said we should have not gone into Iraq. What a farce and what a burden on the American tax payer. All you have done is to put America in a position of economic instability. Why are you so dumb not to this ?
