Worldsizer shows the major parts of the world on a map sized according to their GDP, Population, Military spending etc. The thing is done in Flash and the graphics are done by me, badly. The source is included, so if you improve the graphics, please send me an update and I'll put it up.
Data comes from CIA factbook. I wrote a little parser in Python which extracts code for a certain fact. Unfortunately that one isn't really ready for prime time. All the code resides in the first frame of the main timeline. All the data is in an array that has been generated by Python.

What country is the orange underpants? It looks like Texas.
orange underpants=india by priestofb
and the yellow is china. you can tell by their respective locations and by comparing the area, population, and military expenditures.

In the area map, what's the teal square above India?

The 'orange underpants' is the Indian subcontinent, possibly including Pakistan.

This is Great by Robert
This would be great to see against the voting record of the past presidential election.
If you look at the maps from cnn or some of the other websites they make it seem as though 90% of the country voted for Bush.
It would be cool to see the US geography distorted by its populuation and then we'd probably see a map thats a little more red and blue than all red with a few blue dots scattered around.

I think I've seen that somewhere, can't for the life of me remember where though....

Some of the countries are actually continents (obviously) but here are what I believe the countries/colors are:
pink- Australia pale yellow green- South America pale pink- Mexico light blue- USA brown- Japan darker green- Southeast Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, etc) yellow- China pale green- Russia lime green- Europe light yellow orange- Africa tan/beige- Middle East orange- India dark blue- I'm not exactly sure.
maps of the bush election by peacekaat
there are a lot of maps out there, but check out these: http://www.urbanarchipelago.com/ http://www.electoral-vote.com/carto/nov04c.html http://www.princeton.edu/~rvdb/JAVA/election2004/
the first link breaks down the vote by county, showing how physically tiny the areas were that voted kerry. the second link is a cartograph, showing the nation's electoral vote distribution warped to approximate each state's population. the third is a 3d look at the map with spikes showing population levels. note the big, blue spikes for san fran, la, new york, denver and chicago.
Wha? by Matt
The light blue is north america, not just US. Probably would be a bit more work but it would be alot cooler with the seperate countries or maybe actual continents rather than broad areas. I think i remember seeing something like this in my Geography text book in grade 10.... hehe

Making the map more realistic by Alex
I am very interested in colaborating to improve the graphic quality of this application, with better shapes for countries, since I am interested in using as a means for demonstrating world data. I work with GIS and I am a Geographer, but I am a mediocre programmer. I can try to provide archives with the countries, compatible with GIS software, but I don“t know how to implement it.
gosh people by Alyona
it looks like most part of you didn't learn geography at all... you know neither population of countires, nor their size, not even mentioning GDP... it's a shame, i assume education in USA is too poor...

It's amusing that if you were to represent the population of Europe as 5 people, then the population of Australia would be relative to the sole of one of their shoes.
It's less amusing that the world's food would be spread across those 5 people at 4 biscuits per person, whereas in Africa they'd get one between six.
dark blue? by joneth
the dark blue one must be the former soviet states of kazakhstan, uzbekistan, tajikistan, turkmenistan and krygzstan
