Land Geist

Land Geist is a combination of Googles Zeit Geist, Google Mind Share and Visited Countries. For keywords like 'war', 'poverty', 'party', this project shows which country (names) have the highest relative scores (google shares). I.e. 35% of all pages with the word Iraq on them, also contain the word War, making Iraq leader for war, just after Afghanistan and North-Korea. The axis of evil appear therefore in red.

One conclusion I drew early in this project, is that Google was not my search engine of choice for this project. Google doesn't count very well, which bodes ill for measuring mind share. Google claims that 8% of all pages on the internet that contain "united states", also contain "cheese", which is about 8 times as high as other search engines.

So I settled for AllTheWeb, a search engine I use when Google doesn't do what I want. I created the scripts, ran the measurements, but the results were kind of weird. Iraq scored very well on war and povery, which is explainable, but also on sex. Something was weird. You can check the results of this experiment out your self.

I thought it probably had to do with the fact that Iraq suddenly had become very popular, so it would appear on less serious pages, but Hjalmar Gislason mailed me with a better explanation: Iraq appears a lot on big pages with lots of comments, because people have opinions about the country, so a lot of other words also appear on these pages. He suggested using the NEAR keyword, to count only the 'sex' occurences that were near Iraq.

Neither AllTheWeb, nor Google supports the NEAR keyword, but Altavista does. So I retooled the thing to use Altavista and you can view the results below. If you would like a keyword to be added, drop me a line. The whole thing takes 10 minutes, so doing it online is probably not a good idea.

Coffee and tea
by Richard Osinga
Would be fun to compare coffee and tea maps, to sea in which part of the world people drink coffe and where they drink tea.
A lot of other food stuff could be fun at a more basic level: Rosti (in Switzerland they talk of the Rosti border roughly running between the French and the German speaking cantons), or Couscous for North Africa, where you would have Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria red, Egypt a lot greener and Libya somehwere in between (the Couscous border runs somewhere halfway between Tripoli and Beghazi).

Oil
by Zack
I'm just curious to see what would happen if a search was done on Oil.

sex & iraq
by chaizzilla
i'm guessing the sex & iraq couplet is either from people using iraq as a keyword to get their site indexed or from a lot of bloggers writing about both sex and iraq?

How about measuring the words "dictator" or "dictatorship"? I guess that would show interesting results.

I'd like to see which world countries have the most active Goth music scenes, or least active.

Now, I don't exactly know how this works, but what if we could just put something in like a search bar. Would that take a lllloooonnngg time to process?

Corruption

Can you include corruption? I'm hoping Italy will be top :)

Adjectives
by Komsip
Hi I love your toys. Now I wonder if you could make it search for adjectives too. So that iraqi would be as good as Iraq, swedish as good as Sweden.

Love to see the results for sex seporately, and related words

Vegetarian
by Adey
I would like a view on interest in Vegetarianism. This would be fantastic as even within Europe we have the very different attitudes to animals - with the English having really high rates and not eating meat is almost unknown amongst French nationals.

Cool but....
by Dave
I like it allot it reminds me of the "State of the world atlas" where the countries where scaled to their relative weight for different factors (debt, gdp, strife, divorce, etc)

If I understand correctly your counting pages where the the target term and the country name appear. Thats cool but it would also be cool to be able to target that countries websites. e.g. how many Japanese sites are their about fish compared to Swiss sites. Google lets you do site:.ca to restrict results to pages from a country domain only. Since some countries have less internet penetration you could weight the results to compensate. (if you had a list of % internet enabled by country or something like that, maybe the UN?)

Sure it wouldn't compensate for Italian sites that happen to be .com but still might be fun. Oh! wait it's no good, I doubt there are many US sites that are not .com so they would be severally underweighted.

Just trying to think of a way to measure what "countries" are thinking/talking about rather then what countries are most refered to with the target term.

Hmm maybe langauges instead of country domains ??

Oh well thanks for shareing this cool project.

Technical problems?

The pictures are mostly not corresponding to the links. For example, I click on Oil and get Water. I have seen Malaria, Rice, and Internet far too many times. 'Tis a very interesting concept. Could you fix so we can see the results?

Your project may be worth a letter to The Lancet, a leading medical journal.
What about scores for immunizations, perinatal mortality, infant and child mortality, diarrhea, other infectious diseases like tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, Chagas disease, certain drugs and alcoholic drinks and morbidity and mortality caused?

I'm interested in examining the word Peace.

It is a method to understand philosophy and policy of most peaceful countries.

I'd like to cross reference weather statistics with geopolitical issues and discover means to provide peaceful solutions to all conflict.

ALSO interested in providing database of general solutions broken into categories.

Policy maker comes to tool with some data about their home country and the tool provides solutions based upon relevance along with senser/sat data/images to substantiate the present. Locals more willing to cooperate when a large degree of certainty exists.

Better yet, ability to link implemented solution makers with emerging issues in country for prompt solution building internationally.

It would be served to UN and used for 'conflict avoidance'.

I'd love to see a Land Geist map for the keyword "censorship". I'm assuming China would appear very high in the top-ten, although I'd be interested to see if that is actually the case.

Sex + Iraq
by Anonymous
I looked up "sex in Iraq", and read your page. I just wanted to answer your question. I looked it up because I wondered if there were any satistics on female soldiers being redeployed from Iraq due to pregnancies. I am a female who fought in Iraq during OIF I. During that one it wasn't so bad because everybody was scared as hell, and now I don't think it's that bad because there was so many during OIF II, so they are stricter on sex there. Personally the unit I was in was "Zero Tolerence", on sex and we were a pretty focused group anyway. But with more amenities, and better living conditions that soon changed. I was disgusted because females were purposely getting pregnant to return to their homebases. In one brigade which I won't name, during a 1 year period, at least 20 females returned due to pregnancies. Not to mention that the policy told to soldiers by that command was, "If your're single it's okay". That makes the mission harder on your fellow soldiers who are focused on why they are there.

Enough ranting. I just thought to myself that like a lot of things in the government, that I bet this was kept very quiet, and there's probably not a record of the number of females during the war who were redeployed due to pregnancy. I was right.

Gay
by RDM
I want to see the word "gay". I'm very curious to see if it's high in countries where gays are visible and relatively free (e.g., Netherlands, US), or where they are persecuted (e.g., Iran).

Or would this get conflated with all the porno sites?
Maybe a idfferent word, like homosexual, or homosexuality, or same-sex.....

Interesting concept, but not very accurate. The world's poorest country, Niger, is not even listed in the top 10 poverty index.

A problem...
by Zarano
There is a problem with this method of searching, if they are talking about it negitivley (s?). If, for example, a lot of pages were saying something like: "You cannot get good internet access in the Seychelles"

Also, it would be good if there was some sort of search box.
