Visited States

Visited States is a copy of Visited Countries, but here you select the states of the US instead of the countries of the world and it draws a map where you've been and where not. Also nice as a general mapping tool if you need a graph wich state will vote democrat or something.

The little tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula (the Keweenaw Peninsula) and Isle Royale are part of Michigan, not Minnesota. The line dividing the Keweenaw from the rest of the Upper Peninsula is a canal. Otherwise, good show.

I know this would be slightly more challenging to design, but I would like to designate states that I have merely passed through in a different color than ones I've intentionally visited. What's more, I'd like to color states I've lived in differently from ones I've only visited. Are you up to the challenge?

Neat toy but I think people are somewhat confused when they comment on the # of states v. %of states visited. What they probably don't take into account is that 1) DC is not considered a state and 2) the "number of states visited" is counting all the states PLUS DC whereas the %of states covered isn't taking that into account

The keewenaw penisula (northwestern peninsula off or the upper peninsula) does not get colored when selected. Also, isle royale (island north of michigan, east of wisconsin) does not get colored red.

I think it would be neat if you changed the percentages to reflect how much land area you've covered. Like TX takes up so much % of the land area of the US, + DC takes up so much percent, instead of the % of states you've visited.

Puerto Rico is the last remaining commonwealth in the world.

Guam, however, is a territory as are the Virgin Islands.

Theres a huge difference... like... from PR to the States and vice versa you don't need a passport.. not so with Guam and the VI. We have a bit more lahh than the others. We're directly under but ~in a way~ just as important as a state.. they're directly under us.

We have potential for becomming a state.. just not many of you folk are keen on that idea.

I was wondering why the percent is weird. I mean, I've visited 11 out of 50 states, so it should be 22% instead of 21%...it isn't hard math. Someone else posted and asked if they visited the wrong 20 states and it made me laugh and wonder the same thing. But there should not be any odd percentages.

A debate has been raging among us about whether to include states that have merely been traveled through. I say that you get a better sense of a state reading about it in National Geographic than driving through it on an interstate, but perhaps something like Amtrak or a bus would give you some idea. My friend sensibly mentions the time he was held up flying and had to stay overnight in Pittsburgh, but left with no idea about the city. Always the pragmatist, he stubbornly clings to the notion that driving through a state enough times entitles you to a sense of having visited it. I liked the suggestion above about coloring the states driven through a different color from the states traveled to. Do you have an opinion as the sage developer of this web-gimmick that we all love so much?

sorry about the last comment. love the site, i was doing this with maps before (melancholy me) but now there is an official place to do it. cool. here's the idea: you could upgrade the charts by allowing for an option to specify how many times you have been to a particular state/country. then the places that have been visited the most would have deeper shades of color as opposed to the least visited.

I have visited some states for work and others for vacation. It is my opinion that you learn more about a state when you are there working. Vacations tells you much of nothing about the living conditions of the state . Neither do you learn enough about it to truly know if the state you are visiting is better or worse then your home state.

I've been physically present several feet above the ground of North Dakota...on a train. I've never set foot on North Dakotan soil. So I don't count myself as having visited that state. That makes North Dakota the only one of the Lower 48 that I've never been to. I've been to Alaska, but not Hawaii.

What if you just drove through a state? Is that considered visiting? What ACTUALLY qualifies a visit? Did you have to stay overnight? Did you have to visit a place or two in the area? To those that complain the percentages are off: The site is counting DC as a state, so there are 51 states. 1/51 is less than 2%, hence it is 1%. 20/51 is less than 40%.
And for the Puerto Rico fans: DC is probably counted as a state because it is a special situation. DC is not a "possession", it holds a special place in US stature so that national bodies (Congress and WhiteHouse) can be places without favoring and/or being located in any one state.

i'll be 32 yrs old in 2 weeks. my goal is to go to all 50 states by the time i'm 40 yrs old so i have 18 yrs to go. of 50 states i have been to only 21 of them. this might sound crazy to u all,but in 2006 i'll fly to portland main and stay in every state for up to 3 days till i get to ny and fly home. thats 8 states between main and ny all in 15 days. i want to get to ny by train to see grand central station, take greyhound bus from main till 2 states before ny. in 2004 i took the grey hound bus from dc to florida(stayed in dc and florida) all the states between dc and florida i will count as being in that state even though i did not get off the bus in a few of those states.

back in 1995 i had a rule that statted "I NEVER GO TO THE SAME STATE TWICE" well i have updated that rule it's now "never stay in the same state for over 12 hrs" i have been to az 3 times (in 2001 took the plain to ut stopped in az) (2002 took the bus to nm stopped in az) and ( dec of last yr stayed in mesa,az) the airports that i really hate are 1. dulles in va 2. lax 3. honolulu,hi 4. skyharbor in az . the airports i like are 1. san diego airport (my home town airport) 2. o'hare in il 3. slc,ut 4.tampa fl........i forgot to add denver airport as an ok airport (too new and way to big) plus vegas as the best damm airport only b/c u have slots machines to kill time while waiting for your plain.

I wouldn't enter the discussion about including territories on a map labeled "STATES" except that the moderator opened up a hornet's nest when he added Washington, D.C. to the list. Let's be fair: If D.C. makes it to the list, why not the other territories? They do have delegates elected to Congress who vote in committee on bills that affectthe entire nation. And, while territories pay no income tax, we do pay MORE federal taxes than the average U.S. citizen because ALL goods sold to us at retail have that good old excise tax added in.

Thus said, a couple corrections to a post by Luis. He said: "Puerto Rico is the last remaining commonwealth in the world."

Puerto Rico is NOT the last commenwealth in the world or even in the United States!

Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Virginia are COMMONWEALTHS, NOT STATES!!! Also, the Northern Mariannas Islands is a commonwealth. Check it out. Civic 101, people.

Under statehood, PR would lose its Jones Act exemptions, causing tax-sheltered businesses to pull out and costing up to 20,000 people their jobs. As a state, Puerto Rico would have the 25th largest population in the nation but the lowest per capita income. Feberal Income Tax matches would end dropping the PR government's funding by almost 50%. 40 miles away, in the Virgin Islands, our per capita income is more than 3 times PR and we rank as the 11th highest standard of living in the country. Puerto Rico has some economic work to do before they muster that 2/3 vote of their population needed for statehood. You get to vote every ten years on statehood, independence or sttus quo. When one gets the requisite majrity, the issue MUST be sent to the President of the United States for action. So far, there has never been a majority.

That Bama made a lot of sense with his comments about DC making the list & not other territories. I am originally from DC & now live in PR. We just had elections here & things were up in the air for a minute. However, as you can tell, nothing has changed. Thank God! I love PR as it is without all of the taxation & (unnecessary) Regulations. Here people are more apt to succeed in life through vending. If we were a state then PR we would have to go through alot of BS for licenses & so forth. I didn't have a job when I got here so I sold water on the corners & made a better living than most people here. $5.15 per hour. Huh!!! Now I have my own business that required some licensing but not like the states. It irks me to see people trying to fix things that are not broken. Leave well enough alone & live your life as comfortably as you can .... Thanks for allowing me to put in my 2 cents.

I thought PR was technically a state, albeit "free associated state"(learned it in spanish, not sure if it translated directly), while VA and MA are commonwealths. The only step to making it a full state would be voting congressional representation. I'm not sure if they have presidential electoral votes or not. It is an island that is proud to be American though.

It means that you have a low attention span & can not figure out a pattern or order therefore making you a special person. First of all, this is a FUN website, second of all, it's a map of the United States. Considering D.C. is important to the U.S., I understand why it is included. Who cares if PR and Guam are not included? They're not states. Am I looking at a different site? The one I have lists ALL of the states plus DC and clearly states:"Visited States is a copy of Visited Countries, but here you select the states of the US instead of the countries of the world and it draws a map where you've been and where not. Also nice as a general mapping tool if you need a graph wich state will vote democrat or something." (Which I think explains the use of the word country instead of state. He just didn't change that when copying code). It then goes on to give the link for the Visited Countries map.

This is a cool idea, but it seems like too many people are taking this thing way too serious. It's a simple survey, not a science project. Not everybody will be satisfied, so if there are some places missing, so what? They just won't be counted in your list of places-I've-been. If it is updated later, fine. If broader maps are created later, fine. Apparently, the creator did what he/she wanted to do the way he/she wanted to do it. If anyone else could have done better, they would have. Get your pacifiers and stop your whining!

Ok FIRST of all canada is NOT a state it is a COUNTRY on the other side of the american canadian border... you need to go back to world geography class, by the way its a BEAUTIFUL country.. i keep leaving it to move to the U.S. and always end up missing it and coming back... the free medical ain't bad either.
