Language Evolution

Very unfinished. A shot at an evolution program to calculate the distance between languages. For now it is mostly a python script. For phonetics I'm going to use SAMPA. This chart from Wikipedia is pretty good.

Sounds like a great project.

Do you need any help?

It definitely sounds like (no pun intended) something I'd be interested in helping out with.

Are you aware of the approach where you measure "information distance" between two things by seeing how well they compress together?

Paul Vitanyi and Rudi Cilibrasi from the CWI-Amsterdam have applied this technique (using gzip) to natural language texts, and the languages cluster more or less correctly.

cursing

the term 'fuck you' came from a french battle against the british. the agreement was the french were to lose there middle finger, but amazingly they didn't. yew was the type of wood the french used to make the long bow witch was the new inovation at the time of the battle. the trem started as 'plucking the yew' and was shortened to 'pluck yew' then to 'fuck you' as we know it today.
